Today we watched a video of an English Professor speak about his thoughts on education destroying the ability to be creative. This lecture was extremely well-done and Ken Robinson was a great speaker and for that, I respect his ideas. However, I feel a little overloaded with the education idea. Last night, my mom came home from a GT meeting for my brother and there was a guest speaker at her venue. He was an old teacher and was speaking to his audience about his book titled A Right Brained Child in a Left Brained World. She proceeded to tell me all about his thoughts on educating different types of learners such as those who learn by picture rather than words or sound. She told me that teaching by rote to these children was useless to them. The presenter then showed how these students could be taught spelling by breaking the word 'carpenter' into three words: 'car' 'pen' 'ter' and using a different color of marker for each piece of carpenter. This method appeals to the photographic and color-oriented side of their brains and allows them to easily remember how to spell carpenter or any word taught by this method. My mom rambled on and on about this topic because she found it infinitely more exciting than I ever will. I guess the more people pound in this idea of education methods the less I care. At first I was extremely opinionated and passionate about the subject, as our kids are our future. But I guess it really is true that you can become desensitized to anything. Ken's thoughts were totally valid in my mind, though, and it was nice to hear someone else's opinions other than Daniel Pink's.
